The town is in a picturesque location on the river Danube and is surrounded by rolling and wooded countryside and dates back to Roman times, although the Hungarians did not arrive until the ninth century. In the centre of town are beautiful old houses and atmospheric streets and alleyways which are now actively preserved. Szentendre has been fortunate to avoid the high rise developments which have blighted many parts of Hungary. Many of the restaurants within the town are painted in bright colours this is reflected in the colourful street above. Visitors are attracted to Szentendre as it is renown for its curiosity and antique shops.Szentendre is renowned both at home and abroad for its artistic heritage and has been home to many of Hungary’s foremost artists, poets and sculptors. This heritage has resulted in the town possessing many museums and art galleries, as well as a theatre and a public library. One particularly interesting museum is at Skanzen on the outskirts of Szentendre here an open air museum aims to recreate life in the various regions of Hungary from the 18th century onwards.

The beauty and location of the town allied to its heritage, which has  been maintained to the present day, have resulted in it being a popular destination for visitors from both Hungary and abroad. It is estimated that the town receives over 1,000,000 visitors a year and these are served by a number of hotels and restaurants which cater for all tastes and pockets. The regular train from Budapest brings visitors to the town. The local traders rely on these visitors for there income. Many people from Huntingdon and Godmanchester have visited the town as part of formal twinning activities – why don’t you take the opportunity to find out why so many of them have returned for second and third visits? With the strong pound and easy flights to Budapest there has never been a better time to sample traditional Hungarian hospitality in the ‘little town by the big river'
